Either that or companies typically not associated with audio are trying to get in on the explosion of podcasting.  It can be a lot to take in if you are newer to the audio world as a consumer looking to jump in too.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this review, I&#8217;ll be looking at a sound card-style interface\/condenser microphone combo kit known as the LiveMix Duet. This kit is made by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.synido.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Synido<\/a>, a newer company that came into existence in 2021 under the motto \u201cRecord Your Colorful Life\u201d.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sound interesting? Here&#8217;s the plan: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Test the build quality of both the mic and interface<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Test the strength and cleanliness of the signal from the preamps of the LiveMix Duet<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Test the built-in headphone amp of the interface<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rigorously test the MS1 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepodcasthost.com\/recording-skills\/condenser-vs-dynamic-microphones\/\">condenser microphone<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Read on to see how the LiveMix Duet and MS1 microphone perform!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>Synido provided me with this kit for review purposes. <\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-the-livemix-duet\">What is the LiveMix Duet?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This kit comes with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>LiveMix Duet Sound Card style interface<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Condenser microphone MS1<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>XLR cable<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>USB C to A cable for interface<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Foam shield for the mic<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>User manual<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This interface is a sound card-style <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepodcasthost.com\/equipment\/best-usb-audio-interface\/\">interface<\/a>.&nbsp; This means there is no dedicated ASIO driver for Windows users, and it piggybacks off of Windows Audio.&nbsp;&nbsp; Typically, using ASIO drivers helps to lower the amount of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepodcasthost.com\/recording-skills\/what-is-latency\/\">latency<\/a> you will hear when monitoring during recording.&nbsp;&nbsp; Out-of-box, during recording, there was enough of a noticeable amount of latency for the human ear to pick up.  Most people find it distracting to hear their voice with a slight delay, and it might cause folks to fumble when speaking.  The latency issue is more concerning when you need to match a performance, for example, music overdubbing to other instruments or dubbing to a visual. So this was a definitely early downside of the kit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The First Impressions of the LiveMix Duet<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The interface is super light, which makes its portability useful, but the body feels a bit cheap.  I would handle with care if you plan to travel with it.&nbsp; However, the knobs and switches do have some resistance to them to prevent accidental change of settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This interface\/mic combo kit has a price tag of $99, which is on the low end.  Yet, I couldn\u2019t write off the LiveMix Duet once I got further into my testing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-image uagb-block-c3f6a490 wp-block-uagb-image--layout-default wp-block-uagb-image--effect-static wp-block-uagb-image--align-none\"><figure class=\"wp-block-uagb-image__figure\"><img decoding=\"async\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thepodcasthost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/LiveMix-Duet-1024x316.jpg \" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 150px\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thepodcasthost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/LiveMix-Duet-1024x316.jpg\" alt=\"Close up of the LiveMix Duet\" class=\"uag-image-43737\" width=\"1024\" height=\"316\" title=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><em><\/em>Connections\/Features for the LiveMix Duet<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>2 XLR combo \u00bc inch inputs for either a mic or instrument cable<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Switches for channels 1 and 2 to swap between line level and instrument<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>One \u00bc inch headphone jack<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Two \u00bc inch jacks for speaker output<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>48V Phantom Power for channels 1 and 2<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The ability to connect to a computer or mobile device<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Installation Process of the LiveMix Duet<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This interface is NOT plug-and-play.  You must head over to the Synido website download page.  There you can grab the LiveMix Duet software for either Mac or Windows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This will install a driver for your computer to recognize the device and software that contains EQ settings.  Once installed, it shows up as &#8220;Synido&#8221;, with a number representing the software version.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-image uagb-block-7b573688 wp-block-uagb-image--layout-default wp-block-uagb-image--effect-static wp-block-uagb-image--align-none\"><figure class=\"wp-block-uagb-image__figure\"><img decoding=\"async\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thepodcasthost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/software-edited.png \" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 150px\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thepodcasthost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/software-edited.png\" alt=\"A screenshot of the Synido software\" class=\"uag-image-43919\" width=\"686\" height=\"416\" title=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Recording Quality of the LiveMix Duet<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The interface didn\u2019t have any interference issues from the USB port (hums).&nbsp; The preamps are relatively clean, with the tone being much better than I had anticipated.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p><iframe width=\"100%\" height=\"180\" frameborder=\"no\" scrolling=\"no\" seamless=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/share.transistor.fm\/e\/ab8d8eb1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I used the dynamic mic, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepodcasthost.com\/equipment\/shure-sm58-review\/\">Shure SM58<\/a>.&nbsp; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepodcasthost.com\/equipment\/audio-hiss-dynamic-mics-gain-levels\/\">Dynamic mics are \u201cgain hungry\u201d<\/a>, meaning they require more input gain to achieve <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepodcasthost.com\/recording-skills\/how-to-set-recording-levels\/\">healthy recording levels<\/a>, which makes it perfect for a preamp test (input gain).&nbsp; I was able to achieve healthy levels of -25dB RMS.&nbsp; The gain knob was turned almost all the way up, but I didn&#8217;t hear any notable self-noise or distortion introduced with the preamps being pushed to the max.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This was a pleasant surprise considering the price tag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>Your room can have a big effect on the tone and recording quality. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepodcasthost.com\/recording-skills\/how-to-create-silent-home-studio\/\">Treat your recording space<\/a> as much as possible!<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Headphone Amp of the LiveMix Duet<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The headphone amp is good for this price range.&nbsp; I used the headphones <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/beyerdynamic-Over-Ear-Studio-Headphones-construction\/dp\/B0011UB9CQ?crid=BWVQKY3WZPUS&amp;keywords=dt990&amp;qid=1673602058&amp;sprefix=dt990%2Caps%2C220&amp;sr=8-5&amp;ufe=app_do%3Aamzn1.fos.f5122f16-c3e8-4386-bf32-63e904010ad0&amp;th=1&amp;linkCode=ll1&amp;tag=thepodhos-20&amp;linkId=e5610358fd7e89f0a8355672565aa61f&amp;language=en_US&amp;ref_=as_li_ss_tl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">DT990 Pro 250 ohm<\/a>.&nbsp; These headphones require a fair amount of amplification to achieve adequate volume.&nbsp; I was able to achieve a \u201cgood enough volume\u201d at the 11 o\u2019clock position, but, after that, there was some noticeable hiss from the amp.&nbsp; Headphones like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepodcasthost.com\/equipment\/rode-nth-100-review\/\">NTH-100s<\/a> worked much better as these require less amplification to achieve adequate volume before reaching hissy territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Initial Recording for the MS1<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The initial recording came out nice and clean.&nbsp; There was no device noise from the microphone or interference of any kind. &nbsp;The tone wasn&#8217;t as clear as I would have liked, but it\u2019s nothing a little <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepodcasthost.com\/equipment\/tools-trade-equalizers-eq\/\">EQ<\/a> can\u2019t fix.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-image uagb-block-f34fde56 wp-block-uagb-image--layout-default wp-block-uagb-image--effect-static wp-block-uagb-image--align-none\"><figure class=\"wp-block-uagb-image__figure\"><img decoding=\"async\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thepodcasthost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/ms1-mic-887x1024.jpg \" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 150px\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thepodcasthost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/ms1-mic-887x1024.jpg\" alt=\"MS1 in box\" class=\"uag-image-43742\" width=\"887\" height=\"1024\" title=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><iframe width=\"100%\" height=\"180\" frameborder=\"no\" scrolling=\"no\" seamless=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/share.transistor.fm\/e\/a71be7cd\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>Later on in my testing, I discovered it was the software\u2019s EQ features interfering with the tone.<\/em> <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>You can pair the MS1 mic with the LiveMix Duet software, which has some EQ settings.&nbsp; However, I found the EQ bands too wide.&nbsp; Aside from boosting or attenuating certain frequencies, you can mute the mic and playback from the software.  Currently, the software is a bit lacklustre, and I would do any EQ tweaks in the mix stage post-recording.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">MS1 Off-Axis Test<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a slight drop in volume when you lean to either side by an amount possible sitting in a chair with arms.&nbsp; However, there was no major change in tone, so any \u201cvolume\u201d loss can be edited afterwards if you happen to be slightly off-center of the mic capsule.<\/p>\n\n\n<p><iframe width=\"100%\" height=\"180\" frameborder=\"no\" scrolling=\"no\" seamless=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/share.transistor.fm\/e\/5de806ce\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">MS1 Plosive Test<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I used the foam shield that comes with the mic, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepodcasthost.com\/recording-skills\/mic-technique-for-podcasters\/\">mic placement technique<\/a> will still be required to lessen plosives at the recording stage.&nbsp; It would be wise to also additionally use a pop filter with the foam shield.&nbsp; One thing to note is that the stand for the mic is flimsy.&nbsp; It had trouble propping up the mic\u2019s weight, so I was unable to angle the mic since it would fall over.&nbsp; I also noticed the threads for screwing the pieces weren\u2019t the best quality, as they wouldn\u2019t catch or unscrew easily.<\/p>\n\n\n<p><iframe width=\"100%\" height=\"180\" frameborder=\"no\" scrolling=\"no\" seamless=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/share.transistor.fm\/e\/458ebf2d\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Using the LiveMix Duet with a Mobile Device<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a braided cable provided that has two USB C male to USB A Male connectors.&nbsp; The USB C\u2019s are clearly labelled for a cell phone and for the interface.&nbsp; You must have access to a powered USB outlet\/hub to supply enough power to the interface.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is no specific app from Synido to record via a cellphone, so you will need to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepodcasthost.com\/recording-skills\/best-audio-recording-apps-for-android\/\">source your own app<\/a>.&nbsp; However, it is plug-and-play once everything is connected with the cable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The tone of the MS1 became clearer using a cellphone app as the recording software.&nbsp; This is most likely due to the EQ settings from the computer software not interfering. At this time, I haven\u2019t found a way to bypass the EQ to the mic from the software, which is a bit annoying. &nbsp;The instructions from Synido are a bit lacking.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There was no interference (hums) that is usually associated with mobile device recording.  My cell service, Bluetooth, and Wifi were active at the time of the recording.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-image uagb-block-527a5dde wp-block-uagb-image--layout-default wp-block-uagb-image--effect-static wp-block-uagb-image--align-none\"><figure class=\"wp-block-uagb-image__figure\"><img decoding=\"async\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thepodcasthost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/cell-phone-recording.png \" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 150px\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thepodcasthost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/cell-phone-recording.png\" alt=\"A spectrogram of the cell phone test for the Ms1 and LiveMix Duet\" class=\"uag-image-43744\" width=\"635\" height=\"312\" title=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><em>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepodcasthost.com\/editing-production\/introduction-to-audio-spectrogram\/\">spectrogram<\/a> of the cell phone test for the MS1 and LiveMix Duet<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n<p><iframe width=\"100%\" height=\"180\" frameborder=\"no\" scrolling=\"no\" seamless=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/share.transistor.fm\/e\/9c7e533f\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Overall Thoughts and Conclusion for the LiveMix Duet<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the cheaper feel of the interface, the LiveMix Duet is comparable to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepodcasthost.com\/equipment\/focusrite-scarlett-2i2-review\/\">Scarlet interface from Focusrite<\/a> for its performance.&nbsp; In my opinion, it does some things slightly better, such as with the preamps and headphone amp.&nbsp; Latency can be an issue, and the stand is the biggest drawback, though you can swap that out. &nbsp;However, for its $99 price tag, you get a decent introductory interface and mic that works via a computer or cell phone.&nbsp;
