In 2022 we moved into second-generation territory with the release of the Rodecaster Pro II. This new digital mixer\/audio interface combo unit is jammed-packed with features for a podcaster or live streamer.&nbsp; In this review I will:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Cover a plethora of features<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Test out the Revolution Preamps<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Test out the onboard processing from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aphex.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">APHEX\u00ae<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And more!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Read on to see if the Rodecaster Pro II is the audio solution for you!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The items mentioned in this review were provided by Rode for review purposes. Apple users will need to buy a lightning cable to USB C or adapter.&nbsp;&nbsp; Windows users will also need to download an ASIO file from Rode\u2019s website for DAW use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rodecaster Pro II: Inputs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Rodecaster Pro 2 has four Neutrik\u00ae combo inputs.&nbsp; This means these inputs can be XLR mic inputs, instrument in, or line level.&nbsp; Neutrik\u00ae is known for having high-quality connectors.&nbsp; In addition, you can connect your phone via Bluetooth for call-in guests or any communication app and have their feed on a separate track.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a Windows system, the ASIO caused all audio to be muted outside of a DAW, which is an unfortunately common issue.&nbsp; However, with the dual USB function, I was able to hear audio in my DAW and Windows audio (everything outside of the DAW).&nbsp; My DAW was routed to USB1 (Main) and Windows Audio to USB 2 (Secondary). With this setup, I was able to record myself directly into the DAW and a \u201cguest\u201d from a Zoom call, also separated.&nbsp; You could then, potentially, have an additional guest call in and route the Bluetooth feed to its own track. There\u2019s quite a bit of routing you can do.&nbsp; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepodcasthost.com\/recording-skills\/best-tools-for-recording-a-podcast-online\/\">Remote guest recording<\/a> is a bit limited to a few people to keep everyone on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepodcasthost.com\/recording-skills\/recording-on-separate-channels\/\">separate tracks<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"436\" height=\"383\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thepodcasthost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/RODECASTER-INPUTS.png\" alt=\"Inputs Available to the Rodecaster Pro II \" class=\"wp-image-38581\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thepodcasthost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/RODECASTER-INPUTS.png 436w, https:\/\/www.thepodcasthost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/RODECASTER-INPUTS-300x264.png 300w, https:\/\/www.thepodcasthost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/RODECASTER-INPUTS-290x255.png 290w, https:\/\/www.thepodcasthost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/RODECASTER-INPUTS-350x307.png 350w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 436px) 100vw, 436px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Inputs Available to the Rodecaster Pro II <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Note: To get the USB Main and USB secondary you need to either assign each to a physical fader or a virtual fader.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Rodecaster Pro II: Outputs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This mixer has four physical headphone outputs \u2013 no sharing volume for in-person recording! There is also a L\/R \u00bc inch out for speakers.  The Rodecaster Pro II features a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepodcasthost.com\/equipment\/setting-up-mixer-to-record-skype-calls\/\">mix-minus option<\/a> for remote guest recording.  This is a must so that the guest doesn&#8217;t hear a distracting echo of their voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Rode Central App<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Besides adjusting the Rodecaster Pro II settings, you can transfer internal recording and add customized sound effects to the Smart Pads here.&nbsp; Everything is drag and drop, making it super easy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Note: You&#8217;ll need a micro SD card to make internal recordings and add custom sound effects. This is sold separately.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Rodecaster Pro II: Recording<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>All bells and whistles aside, here is the most important piece of the entire review.&nbsp; The UI on the mixer has a visual aid to help you get <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepodcasthost.com\/recording-skills\/how-to-set-recording-levels\/\">healthy recording levels<\/a>.&nbsp; Additionally, a few presets are available, but everything can be done manually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rode claims that you will no longer require a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepodcasthost.com\/equipment\/audio-hiss-dynamic-mics-gain-levels\/\">cloudlifter<\/a>, or the like, for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepodcasthost.com\/recording-skills\/condenser-vs-dynamic-microphones\/\">dynamic mic<\/a> with these preamps.&nbsp; Well\u2026 they were right!&nbsp; Not only is additional gear to get a healthier signal from a dynamic mic not necessary, the signal is also insanely clean.&nbsp; Below are some samples using their presets, manual, and no on-board processing used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Depth Setting:<\/h2>\n\n\n<p><iframe width=\"100%\" height=\"180\" frameborder=\"no\" scrolling=\"no\" seamless=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/share.transistor.fm\/e\/34907501\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">-23.9LUFS or -20.92 RMS with -6 dB true peak<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sparkle Setting:<\/h2>\n\n\n<p><iframe width=\"100%\" height=\"180\" frameborder=\"no\" scrolling=\"no\" seamless=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/share.transistor.fm\/e\/ebcbb5cd\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">-22.8 LUFS or -20.68 RMS -5.22 dB true peak<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Punch Setting:<\/h2>\n\n\n<p><iframe width=\"100%\" height=\"180\" frameborder=\"no\" scrolling=\"no\" seamless=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/share.transistor.fm\/e\/d34d522d\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">-23.4lufs or -20.44 RMS -5.41 dB true peak<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Manual Setting:<\/h2>\n\n\n<p><iframe width=\"100%\" height=\"180\" frameborder=\"no\" scrolling=\"no\" seamless=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/share.transistor.fm\/e\/dfa14305\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">-27.1 LUFS or -24.77 RMS -6 dB true peak.&nbsp; I used a high pass filter to help with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepodcasthost.com\/equipment\/what-is-a-pop-filter\/\">popping plosives<\/a> and exciter only<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">No Processing:<\/h2>\n\n\n<p><iframe width=\"100%\" height=\"180\" frameborder=\"no\" scrolling=\"no\" seamless=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/share.transistor.fm\/e\/338ce691\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">-23.6 LUFS OR -20.56 RMS -4.24 dB True Peak<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All recordings used the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepodcasthost.com\/equipment\/rode-podmic-review\/\">PodMic<\/a> from Rode.&nbsp; Overall, I am very impressed with the quality of these preamps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other Features of the Rodecaster Pro II<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s advertised that it can be used to trigger midi like a controller in a DAW. &nbsp;However, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepodcasthost.com\/editing-production\/reaper-review\/\">Reaper<\/a> and Pro Tools don&#8217;t see the Rodecaster Pro II as a midi controller at this time on a Windows machine.&nbsp; I&#8217;ve seen it work on an Apple computer via Logic from a Youtube video.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Smart Pads are 100% customizable with several pages of &#8220;banks&#8221; that you can flip through.  How you want to use the Smart Pads on-board vocal effects, sound effects, or MIDI triggering is completely up to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Some Cons of the Rodecaster Pro II<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The headphone amp is so-so.&nbsp; There are settings for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepodcasthost.com\/equipment\/rode-nth-100-review\/\">NH-100<\/a> which is the best for \u201cloudness\u201d, but the DT 990 Pros were a tad on the quiet side.&nbsp; Past the 11 o\u2019clock position, there was quite a bit of hiss.&nbsp; It\u2019s more on the quiet side with raw audio. Listening to louder material, like mastered music or a video on Youtube, it was more than sufficient and didn\u2019t need to be set past nine o&#8217;clock.  It may be slightly problematic when used as an interface editing raw audio to hear potential issues needing repairing\/cleaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another irksome feature is that the mixer as an interface only operates at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepodcasthost.com\/q-and-a\/what-does-44100hz-mean-podcast-sample-rates\/\">48kHz<\/a>.&nbsp; Sometimes there are scenarios where you need 44.1kHz or 96kHz.&nbsp; This is a bit of a shortcoming for a unit that is supposed to act as an interface. You would need to potentially watch out for sample rate mismatch issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I couldn\u2019t adjust the processing setting via the Rode Central App \u2013 this may be a Windows-specific issue.
