That means we may earn a small commission should you decide to buy through them, though at no extra cost to yourself!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-as-a-usb-microphone\">As a USB Microphone<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>My testing of this microphone for this portion was completed on an Asus laptop that has 12 GB of RAM.&nbsp; For my computer to recognise the microphone, I had to download the application, MOTIV, from Shure.&nbsp; My initial thoughts of the application were that it is clean-looking and streamlined. This is perfect to not overwhelm beginners, but not stripped enough that a more experienced user would find frustrating for customization.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"tph-adrotate-shortcode-wrap\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-shure-mv7-review-automatic-mode\">Shure MV7 Review: Automatic Mode<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I personally had my doubts about a microphone automatically setting the gain, aka, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepodcasthost.com\/recording-skills\/how-to-set-recording-levels\/\" data-lasso-id=\"9246\">recording level<\/a>. Other USB microphones that have crossed my path with this feature usually garnered extreme results \u2013 either too hot or too low.&nbsp; The RMS readout for the MV7&nbsp; was -23.7dB with a true peak of -4.6. This is impressive for a USB microphone with automatic recording levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I recorded during a windstorm to illustrate an extreme non-ideal recording environment (I highly don\u2019t recommend recording during a windstorm!).&nbsp; Once the recording was boosted to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepodcasthost.com\/recording-skills\/how-loud-should-a-podcast-be\/\" data-lasso-id=\"9247\">\u201cinternet loudness\u201d of -16LUFS<\/a>, the noise from my environment sat around -50dB RMS. This is in the realm of audible, but still low enough that it can be removed with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepodcasthost.com\/editing-production\/audacity-noise-reduction\/\" data-lasso-id=\"9248\">noise reduction tools<\/a>. &nbsp;The MV7 is a dynamic microphone.&nbsp; The common attribute of such is that they typically will pick up less of \u201cthe room\u201d and background noise. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The layout of the Automatic tab in MOTIV is very simple. All you need to do is select your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepodcasthost.com\/recording-skills\/mic-technique-for-podcasters\/\" data-lasso-id=\"9249\">mic position<\/a> and tone that best fits your voice. That\u2019s it! You&#8217;re ready to record into your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepodcasthost.com\/recording-skills\/best-podcast-recording-software\/\" data-lasso-id=\"9250\">software of choice<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-automatic-mode-testing\">Automatic Mode Testing<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-large is-resized\">\n<figure ><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"337\" height=\"335\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thepodcasthost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/RT-Spectrum-1.png\" alt=\"A spectrogram of room tone using iZotope RX Editor to analyze frequency content. However, as you can see in the image of the raw unprocessed recording there are no ground loops. What looks like a hum is the laptop fan, and the tick marks are a bit of creaking from the wind. The room tone is sitting at -60dB RMS. This sits well below the level of the voice so this can be easily cleaned up. &nbsp;It is advised, though, that you still record in a quiet environment. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can take a listen below to my recording test using the automatic gain setting. Despite the windscreen, if you \u201chug\u201d the microphone with the Near Position setting you will still get some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepodcasthost.com\/equipment\/what-is-a-pop-filter\/\" data-lasso-id=\"9252\">popping plosives<\/a>. I also found that the Dark tone setting made my voice a tad muddy. It was more so when using a near position.<\/p>\n\n\n<p><iframe width=\"100%\" height=\"180\" frameborder=\"no\" scrolling=\"no\" seamless=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/share.transistor.fm\/e\/20797a71\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bright was too bright and natural was better. I personally had the best results in manual mode (more on that below) as I had a bit more options to play around with. However, the mud wasn\u2019t overly strong and could be cleaned up with light <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepodcasthost.com\/equipment\/tools-trade-equalizers-eq\/\" data-lasso-id=\"9253\">EQ<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-manual-mode-as-a-usb-microphone\">Manual Mode as a USB Microphone<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For people who want more control but still the convenience of a USB mic, this is the mode for you.&nbsp; Here you can set your own recording levels, enable EQ filters, a limiter, and even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepodcasthost.com\/editing-production\/audacity-compressor\/\" data-lasso-id=\"9254\">compression<\/a>.&nbsp; There is so much customization here that you can find a tone that fits your voice while keeping healthy recording levels by setting your own gain and compression to help you along.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image size-large\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"447\" height=\"717\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thepodcasthost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/manual-window.jpg\" alt=\"Manual settings for the Shure MV7 when used as a USB mic. What Shure does here is brilliant.&nbsp; They simplify it to \u201clight, \u201cmedium\u201d, and \u201cheavy\u201d. This is helping to prevent peaking or jumps and falls, in the perceived loudness of the voice. I would suggest starting with the lowest compression setting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the recording example below, I was able to get a raw recording at -22dB RMS with a true peak of -6dB. I used the settings of light compression with High Pass and Presence Boost. This resulted in a clear and crisp recording.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is more difficult to clip a dynamic mic, but not impossible. I intentionally clipped to see how the limiter would treat the event. The meter read no clipping occurred (hitting 0). There was still a slight \u201ccrunch\u201d sound to the audio.<\/p>\n\n\n<p><iframe width=\"100%\" height=\"180\" frameborder=\"no\" scrolling=\"no\" seamless=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/share.transistor.fm\/e\/f5ae80e3\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-as-a-microphone-with-an-interface\">As a Microphone With an Interface<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To be clear, this one depends greatly on the interface and its preamp.&nbsp; This test used a Scarlett 2i2 MK3 for the interface.&nbsp; <strong>The MOTIV app and its features cannot be used when the microphone is used with an<\/strong> <strong>interface.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Overall, with this setup, the recording levels were low at -29 dB RMS. With the gain knob turned up to 80% I was getting distortion from the interface itself.&nbsp; If you would like to use the MV7 with an interface, it would work better with either an external preamp, an interface with \u201cstronger\u201d preamps, or a cloud lifter. download the MOTIV app from Google Play for Android devices or the Apple Store for iPhones.&nbsp; This version of the app is very basic compared to the computer version.&nbsp; You record within this app.&nbsp; The only issue I had with using a cell phone is that I couldn\u2019t change my recording settings on the fly like I could on a computer as a USB mic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, to my pleasant surprise, a few things:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>No hums<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The tone was very similar to using it as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepodcasthost.com\/equipment\/best-usb-microphones-roundup-podcasters\/\" data-lasso-id=\"9256\">USB mic<\/a> with a computer<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No noticeable noise was added from the recording as the cell phone was the recording device.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Note: I had my cell phone in airplane mode during this test.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-other-aspects-of-note\">Other Aspects of Note:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The build is sturdy &#8211; the piece that houses the connection for a boom arm or stand is easily adjustable and made from metal.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepodcasthost.com\/go\/amazon\/shure-mv7\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"9257\">price of $249 USD<\/a> is a bargain for all the customizations possible when used with the MOTIV application.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Has the ability to monitor directly from the mic via a headphone jack<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Has a touch panel for adjusting gain, monitoring volume, headphone mix, and mic muting rather than flipping back to the app.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Settings within the app can be saved as presets for fast setup to keep consistency.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div
