I had that most excellent experience, recently, of being asked to come on someone else\u2019s show. Caroline McKenna, the host of The Charity Peeks Podcast<\/em>, asked me to introduce the concept of storytelling for the non-profit sector. I had some rough notes on my iPad, but I didn\u2019t refer to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As I was being interviewed, I found that I was boring myself. Now, if I<\/em> was bored with my delivery, imagine how the listeners would be feeling. I could imagine me putting them into a long, deep coma. Or, at the very least, having them reach for the STOP button.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perception Versus Reality<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When I listened back, I discovered three things. Firstly, the \u2018ehmms\u2019 and \u2018ahhhss\u2019 were more frequent than I\u2019d like. I was reminded that I still have issues with hearing my voice<\/a>. But, to my surprise, I found that my interview wasn\u2019t boring at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My perception didn\u2019t match the reality. Whether it\u2019s through lack of confidence or my natural self-deprecating manner, I was convinced that I was boring. I think we all have that in us. The brain can be a cruel organ. It fills us with self-doubt and creates narratives that simply aren\u2019t true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
